We also fly from Manchester regularly. We find that their security rules are not consistent. Sometimes it's shoes off, other times kept on.

It's worth buying fast track for the grandparents, directly from the airport website.

Good advice about just grabbing seats and staying put!

Mixing up the consistency to make it inconsistent is excellent for tight Security.

All tips have been welcome. We only live 40 mins from airport & as there are 8 of us inc 3 kids it wouldn’t make sense to stay overnight in a hotel. I definitely will look into booking breakfast. We will try to get through the family security as that speeds families with children. However, it depends on whether there is a jobsworth on the gate. We did it once and they would only let parents through, not grandparents. Yet the next time they were fine. Inconsistent. Same with iPads, some staff say it’s fine to leave them in your bag, some make you put them in the tray. Still, roll on the sunshine.
One thing to watch out for is overnight motorway closures - with all the roadworks going on on the motorways they're regularly closed overnight, if they are closed it's usually till 06:00. So if it's 40 mins on the motorway make sure the motorway is open, otherwise could be much longer! You can check on the Highways England website https://highwaysengland.co.uk/roadworks-search/

Has anyone flown out of Manchester on Boxing day?

We are flying Easyjet and I just wondered if it would worse or better than a normal day?
