Why does Router kill my pc speed?

I set up the wireless router but it has killed my browsing speed big time. The thing is, the laptop is not even switched on so its not like its sharing my internet.

how slow
how fast were you before
who is your isp
cable or adsl

etc etc

although if your laptop isn't switched on how do you know its slow

I have the Belkin wireless G router Model f5d7230-4. I have the broadband cable from Virgin which used to un directly into the Modem provided. BUT it now goes directly into the router. Another cable comes from the router and connects to my PC.
The only thing that connects to the router is the cable from Virgin for the Broadband which has a lead out to the pc.

I currently use Windows Xp. Before using the router, the Modem was connected to the PC directly. It was very fast before, ie when loading a page here on MSE it would be up in seconds. Now when the Router is connected it takes almost a minute. (When i say connected i dont mean the laptop is in use, i just mean its set up so the leads connect to it and then into the pc through the modem).

Isp? Well i use virgin media and as for cable, adsl?? Its broadband, doesnt use a phoneline..

Even when the laptop is not swithced on but as i say teh router is set up it takes ages....I have temporarily removed the router and the speed has jumped back.

I could understand it if both appliances where sharing the speed but when its just the one, im confused..

Should be Virgin cable into Virgin Modem > Ethernet Cable to Belkin router > Ethernet cable to PC.

Please confirm exactly how you have it connected up.

The virgin cable runs into the Belkin router. From the belkin router runs a cable into the pc.

From what I can tell from the manual, it's a router only. So the Virgin cable must go to the modem first, then the modem to the router, then the router to the PC. That's how it should be connected, but the OP isn't really making it clear, how it is connected.

That's why so far I can only recommend upgrading the firmware of the router. It's something that should probably be done anyway and it's the only thing I know for sure is in the current set up. Hopefully it'll solve any speed related bugs if that is the problem.

I'm not convinced that it's cabled/installed correctly yet!
