It wasn't your husband who was endangering lives - it was the management company not ensuring that the equipment was working correctly. The only time lives were in danger was when there was an actual fire and everyone ignored the fire alarm.
Here's a suggestion - it might not work, but it's worked for me in the past. Make a part payment - pay for the damage you caused, and leave it up to them to sue you for the rest. Chances are they won't bother, because they'd then have to go to court and explain things, and it would become clear that they'd broken a gazillion regulations in not having a system that was fit for purpose. So - make a sensible estimate of what you think you owe, and pay it quickly.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0
