    never used an IFA and always wonder how it works.

    do IFA just advise you what to invest in?
    There is a whole range of options, from just getting advice on that to invest in, through to a fully managed service where you don't lift a finger.

    It doesn't have to be all or nothing.
    You could move some away from the IFA - say half.
    That would reduce the IFA fees (as long as you don't move into another bracket) and also mitigate the risk of you doing something wrong.
    If you are still adding to your investments you could start to DIY with new money.

    Think about how much you would be comfortable doing yourself and use that as a proportion.
