Making us pay a renewal fee

I believe the fees are not being banned for another year with respect to existing tenancies.I had no idea that such a thing existed, we’ve been renters for ages and are aware these fees are pretty standard but just don’t understand why they are digging their heels in when the law quite clearly states these fees are banned! Just want to know if what they are saying is legit or not
edit:
Seems a new fixed term would prohibit fees:The Act will not immediately apply to tenancies or agreements that were entered into before 1 June 2019 (even if after that date they become statutory periodic on the coming to an end of the fixed term), so unless the tenancy is renewed (new fixed-term tenancy) on or after 1 June 2019 any fees payable pursuant to an existing tenancy agreement can still be charged. However from 1 June 2020 all fees will be prohibited regardless of the tenancy start date.0 -
That means unless the current one has exit fees they just wait and fees cannot be charged for a new tenancy.0

However, would not the case for letting the tenancy rollover to a Periodic on 26 June not trigger a payment of a fee as it is not a renewal of a Fixed Term?0
