If you are a first time buyer why do you have to complete on the same day as you move in? Why can't you complete on a Friday and move in on a Saturday?

Your vendors may not be able to choose a day to suit you because the people in the chain above them can't.

There is no chain above them. The house is empty.
My shifts are all over the place and completely random and work 7-7.30 (getting home for 9pm). I don’t work Monday-Friday 9-5 like most so very different circumstances.

There is no way they will exchange with you before they are ready up the chain. It isn't "just the two weeks" it is the risk of the rest of the chain falling through after they have sold to you and them being homeless.

Completion date is a negotiation across the whole chain.

You have offered one date, they have offered two. Both parties seem inflexible and that doesn't even include the rest of the chain.

Why only Fridays? Solicitors seem to favour Fridays but it is the worst day to exchange because if something goes wrong the whole chain is in limbo until Monday morning.

Thank you. This is what I wanted to know, whether or not it was at all possible. I thought it was something that had to be done once all parties are ready but I’ve heard from a few of my colleagues that it isn’t uncommon to break the chain the way I explained in my original post so just wanted to clarify.

There are no other parties, the house they are buying is empty.
Not sure why only Fridays. Apparently the vendors have said that the husband works away all week so can only do Fridays (which is funny as the house is literally round the corner from where I live now and his van is always away during the day and parked outside of an evening). Maybe so they have all weekend then to move stuff? Either way, I feel like we have no say in this whatsoever and that we’re just going to have to do what they want in the end

There is nothing stopping you completing on a Friday and moving in when you have time, during the next week. Don't waste two months for the sake of a few days overlap, it makes no sense!

If I had broken the chain as requested I would have been staying with a friend with everything in storage which costs a lot of money. I would also have paid two lots of removal costs. I almost agreed to it but am so pleased I didn’t as I would have moved out in mid May expecting to complete my purchase at the end of May.........in the event that didn’t happen until the very end of July, 10 weeks later.

Not sure my relationship with my friend would have survived either!

You are in a lucky position being in rented, you can complete at any point the chain is ready & move in any time convenient to you after that.

There could be a hundred issues that have slowed down their contract and, as you are party to that transaction, you have no idea what they might be. A house is a major purchase and they need to be allowed to do their due diligence, just like you will have done yours.

The exchange and completion date has to be convenient for everyone, as a ftb you are the most flexible link in the chain as you don't have to be out of a house and into the new one in the same day. Believe me, if you've found this so stressful you don't want to try buying and selling at the same time like your vendors are doing.

Complete on a Friday and move in on the weekend or over next week as you have time and in dribs and drabs Over a week or two if needed
This will be the easiest completion and move you'll ever have.
A lot of angst over nothing.

Thanks. I only wanted some advice, that is all. I think I’ll stop using forums for advice as I don’t think you are understanding my circumstances correctly. But thank you for your time

I think people understand them perfectly. Many of us were in precisely your position buying our first home. I had a 3 week overlap between rental and first house, It was great and made for the least stressful of any of my house moves.

In your position with shifts all over the place then having several days or even weeks to move in, to clean the house (one of your requirements, yes?) is (a) great and (b) about the only time you'll ever have this chance not to be trying to move in as laggard vendors are still shifting their stuff out the door

You appear to be pushing yourself into a corner of your own making.

How am I doing that? And no you don’t understand my circumstances perfectly at all. There are many other personal factors that I wish not to delve into on public websites. My question was simply asking if it could be possible. I wasn’t saying I was going to do it. I wanted some polite responses which I got maybe 1 or 2 and that’s enough for me. Again thanks for your time
