    many thanks for all the really helpful replies.

    I presume that if building control was involved then this would be recorded with the council? if this was the case then it would be possible to find out whether the foundations are deep and strong enough....?

    otherwise, i guess it's a matter of digging up/around the existing foundations?

    Building control wouldn't have been involved with an ordinary conservatory, as it wouldn't comply. It would be exempt, so long as external grade doors were retained between it and the house. It's an outbuilding.

    No harm looking on the council's web site, where they usually have all the planning applications and building control sign-offs, but I doubt if you will find anything.
