Thanks guys for all your help.

I was upset at the time and but like you’ve said, it’s only one late payment, I’ll try not to dwell and move on. Will you updated on my complaint outcome.
  • I think this is not correct. I have often requested changes to direct debits for utility services, and occasionally - though not recently - for credit card payments. There is certainly a delay in the request being actioned (10 days?), but in the mean time the previous arrangement should hold. For example, if I contact Barclaycard to move from £200 per month to full payment within the 10-day cut-off period, I would expect the £200 still to be taken in the current month. Whenever you request such an arrangement the direct debit reference number in your current account stays the same. This indicates that it hasn't been cancelled, but merely amended.

The scenario described by the OP would inevitably result in late payments all over the place. In effect, there would only be three weeks out of four when you could make a change and not potentially fall foul of a late payment.

It seems for the OP that Tesco is at fault. Why did they not continue with the current arrangement, namely the fixed payment, until the new arrangement was in place?
  • OP could make a manual payment until the new DD plan was in place.

    Johnsmith1890,

That’s just it - I assumed the required payment would be still taken as my direct debit wasn’t being cancelled just the amount changed. They didn’t make it obvious to me or contact me to tell me to arrange a manual payment.

They didn’t even contact me to let me know I’d missed a payment, only a manual letter 2 weeks after but by then it had gone to the credit agencies marked as a late payment.

    Completely unfair in my opinion.

Just as one swallow dosent make a summer, one late payment will not do you much harm.

You can become too obsessive with credit files, they are important if your looking to borrow, but its not the end of the world if you mess up.

If Tesco refuse to remove the black mark you should take it to the ICO, as a matter of principle.

We had a similar experiences when trying to change the dd away from the minimum full amount, it's almost as though they want to make it as difficult as possible for people to repay the debt! this has happened twice, tesco & M&S cards, both now cancelled. One glitch will not be the end of the world although you could ask for a goodwill removal of the default if it was not clear.
  • You can ask for the marker to be removed.
But it’s an accurate representation of what happened.

    !!!,

It’s not an actual representation of what happened if the customer is under the impression the required payment will be collected by direct debit. Tesco also have a resonsilibility to make sure the customer is fully aware of any small print that’s not made obvious, especially ones with disabilities like Autism.

Common sense needs to be used here but unfortunately these systems are run by a computer and have no human involvement.
  • Autism (or other) or not, if there’s “small-print” it will be in your t’s and c’s when signing up for the card and received thereafter.

I take it you’ve read those from top to bottom?
