return flight cancelled

Not due to travel till Dec 2019

have booked hotel at airport, lounge and car parking

Got a call today to tell me the return flight that is due to leave JFK at 21:00 has been cancelled, so my alternative is to leave 13:00 go via Atlanta then back to UK adding 6 hours to the journey and offered £50 pp or full refund for the flights/hotels

I have asked them if they can arrange for us to fly back the day before direct - they are looking at this, would mean a refund for hotel for 1 night and to be honest staying for the last night is pointless as we would have to get up and practically leave for the airport.

I have also contacted the hotel/lounge at Manchester to see if I can move the dates - waiting to hear.

I have Travel insurance - not sure if it covers things like this

Has anyone had this happen, obviously we are not stranded as we haven't left yet but we will be £250 out of pocket for the hotel, lounge and parking if we can not claim/move dates or come back on a direct flight the day before

Any advice from anyone that has handled a similar situation would be welcomed thanks in advance

Which airline and how did you book? There’s plenty of flights from NYC to the U.K. everyday.

I’m guessing it’s Virgin/Delta if it’s via Atlanta, and I doubt that’s the only alternative from JFK to Manchester, but if the only flight really has been cancelled you could suggest they route you on an evening flight via London, which would at least give you you’re last day in NYC.

Alternatively look at the options for flights - Thomas Cook and Virgin fly to JFK and United to Newark, which is also perfectly accessablie for NYC, if there’s a better option take the refund and book new flights.
