Insurance when upgrading from automatic licence to manual

Hello,
I have held an Automatic driving licence for many years, but now need to get a Manual licence instead.
I want to use my partner's car in order to practice in and do the actual test. However, I'm having difficulty in finding insurance, as I'm not technically a provisional licence holder, as I hold a full licence, albeit an automatic-only one.
Does anyone know where I could get insurance for this?
Thank you.

And what did your partners insurers say? They should be able to add you as a named driver and as long as you have your L plates on and him supervising you (assuming he's over 21 and had his licence for 3 years) you'll be fine.

Yes, you are "technically" a provisional licence holder.
You have a full licence for B (Auto), which gives you provisional entitlement for a vehicle that requires a full B licence.
And, yes, you will need L plates...0 -
I've wondered this myself, as I know a few people with an Auto only licence, and wondered what the procedure is if they wanted to "upgrade".
I've not come across and insurer yet, that asks the question, do you have an AUTO ONLY full licence, only if you hold a "full" or "provisional" licence.
I think he'll need to speak to his insurers and ask the question. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.56% of current retirement "pot" (as at end January 2025)0 -
Just mentioned this to DH and he thinks you should answer this question based on the car you are insuring.
So if you are insuring a manual car.... you are a provisional licence holder in respect of that vehicle. Makes sense. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.56% of current retirement "pot" (as at end January 2025)0
