I got two rescue cats 6 months ago. They are brothers, i always wanted two cats so that they could play togther. Saddly one of my cats felix the more confident and independant cat got ran over on wedensday, i found him on the side of the road dead on the wedensday night after spending hours looking for him.
My question is my other cat smudge is now all alone he is just over a year old. I have been giving him lotsof attension but he has never liked cuddles. I dont know what to do for the best keep giving him lots of attension, give him time and space. Also i dont know if i should get him a little freind to play with. (smudge stays in the housed or garden, while felix went exploring).
I really just want to do what is best for smudge. any suggestions would be most appriciated.

Give it time to see how the other cat gets on - don't assume they grieve like we do.
We had 2 rescue cats, one quiet elderly female and a younger very lively and playful male cat that we got at different times. The young one was killed on the road 3 weeks ago and since then our older cat has come to life. She shows an interest in hunting, is playful and friendly around the house and seems to have taken on a new lease of life. I know the young cat pestered her, wanting to play, but now see that she must have been really downtrodden by him.
Over the years we've had many cats and there have been some who really prefer being the only cat, so give your's time to see if it does appear to be lonely or not.0

I found with mine that if they need an extra cuddle they will ask/demand it but do keep an eye out on her

So sorry to read about Felix. We've found that if one cat dies, if the other cat sees the dead one and sniffs at them, they know they're dead and don't start to call for them (I know this might sound a bit gruesome...sorry.) When one of the cats just disappears not to be seen again the remaining one often calls out for them for a few days. We lost one of our ferral cats recently, lovely looking unneutered burmese tom who looked after one of the younger street cats, she was at al oss for quite some time.
Probably best to wait a while and see how Smudge reacts.0

I'm so sorry to hear about your little one.
we adopted a brother and sister, and unfortunately the sister died earlier this year. We did wait a little while but her brother was out of sorts, they were very very close, would sleep snuggled together etc. He also didnt exercise or play as much. We recently got a lovely maine coon kitten and she has brought him to life again, our 6 yr old boy is now like a second kitten.
I would give it a little time, and see how he gets on alone then think getting an addition if it seems appropriate. Kittens are easiest to introduce to an adult cat in general, but it depends on the cat. In the meantime, lots of cuddles and toys to keep him amused.0
