Asus X555LA no sound from DVDs etc

No sound when playing DVDs etc, but there is sound from playing vids in YouTube etc. Includes no sound when ripping DVD tracks to digital format using Handbrake.
Running Win 8.1 - updated sound drivers from Asus website (still refers to Vista!) - makes no difference. Upgraded to win 10 (went badly) also still didn't work, reverted back to Win 8.1.
Nothing wrong in Device Manager either.

*But* using Linux on same laptop all sound works perfectly - therefore I use Handbrake for ripping on that.

Any suggestions?

Well I don't know what Asus site you've been looking at because everything here regardless of which processor model you have:
    https://www.asus.com/uk/Laptops/X555LA/HelpDesk_Download/

Only comes up with Windows 7, 8.1 or 10 drivers with no mention of Vista.

On windows 10 it is possible to set volumes for different applications, right click on the main volume icon and "Open Volume Mixer" to see if the DVD player software is muted or low volume.
(Although I could be wrong, I often am.)

You need to run a clean install for it to work.
