I mean if you're in or walking past a branch. Or ask for cashback at the supermarket till.

Not available at Sainsburys but not sure about other supermarkets.

It's something that old people, tax evaders and drug dealers use to facilitate transactions.

Also something that children need to use to enable them to learn about money, budgeting, saving and spending.

    I've been Money Tipped!
My local corner shop used to do withdrawals free, obviously this was because much of their clientele used to get cash out and spend it there, they now charge £1, seems convenient that last year they got a Post Office in and have a sign saying "free withdrawals at post office" except that counter closes at 4pm every day and the shop is open till 8pm.

Apart from that my nearest other machine is town centre 20 minutes walk away.

Ah yes, but managing "virtual" money when you are a child is not the same as going off to the bank or building society with your savings and paying it in.

Learning about notes and coins, and what you can use them for, when you are very young is, in my opinion, a good start for a sensible financial future. My son now has a FlexOne account with Nationwide, and has a debit card to go with it. All well and good but he is still at an age where cash would be more practical, and indeed, he can see the going of it, whereas if he uses his debit card (and he does) and it runs to three pages due to buying bags of crisps, and similar purchases it doesn't quite feel the same as having an empty pocket.

When he does take cash out (and hopefully will continue to be able to use free ATM machines) it's only £10 at a time and then I break it down into coins so that he doesn't lose it. Easy for a note to disappear amongst the rubbish he keeps in his pockets!!

We have an excellent market 3 times a week. Only one stallholder caters for cards, with an ancient 'slider' machine that I thought had gone some time ago. There are some really good bargains to be had in fresh fish and farm produce, plants, batteries, all kinds of produce. Only available to buy with cash. Fortunately there are no less than 3 ATM's in the market place, all still free. Cash is not going to die soon here or in other rural locations with a regular market. A different story in urban areas, but that is the story in the UK. Urban dwellers and rural residents have different lives and priorities.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

No real excuse to be honest, £45 for a card machine from PayPal without any kind of monthly fee, and 1% on every transaction - very competitive with paying cash into a business bank account. Cards don't stop working when taken out of city boundaries.

If somewhere doesn't take cards then the fruit and vegetables could make me cry with their sheer wonder, I don't carry cash so I'm not buying any.
