Memory Upgrade Advise...

Hi Peeps....I am looking to upgrade the memory on my laptop and need a bit of advise.
I have a Toshiba Satellite 2450-201, which currently has 256mb. Searching this forum for some info lead me to https://www.crucial.com. Firstly I selected my laptop model in the "Crucial Memory Advisor Tool", which found combatible memory including the a 1GB, 200-pin SODIMM, DDR PC2700 memory module, which I would like to go for. It also revealed that my laptop has a maximum memory of 2048mb.
However, when using the "Crucial System Scanner Tool", it reveals the my system "already has the maximum amount of memory installed" (256mb), and that they currently can't offer me any modules for my system.
I can't believe my laptop has a maximum memory of only 256mb, but I don't want to jump in and pay the £55 for the 1GB module if it is completely useless and/or may damage my laptop.
Thanks Peeps

What does it say in the Laptop manual regarding maximum memory? The system scanner tool is good but it isn't faultless. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
Thanks for the reply! I thought someone might mention the word "manual". I stupidly threw it out a few months ago because I figured I hadnt used it in over two years so why would I start now?:o
I have had a look at the user's manual found in my start menu, but it only really explains how to change the module when upgrading. Could there perhaps be another way to check on the laptop itself?0 -
Hi Donnie...so can I understand from your post that I have two memory slots which can each hold a maximum of 512mb? Sorry I know its not exactly rocket science but this is all rather double dutch to me!0

Yes, that right.

Maximum expandability : 1,024 MB
2 x 512MB.
128MB Toshiba Satellite PC2100 DDR SODIMM (p/n KTT3614/128)
256MB Toshiba Satellite 200pin PC2100 DDR SODIMM (p/n PA3127U-1M25)
512MB Toshiba Satellite/Dynabook PC2100 DDR SODIMM (p/n PA3164U-1M51)0 -

Thanks for your help peeps....just one more quick "q"...
On the Toshiba website the specs of my laptop state :
"2 x memory slots (1 to configure)"
Probably a silly question, but what would "1 to configure" mean?
I am hoping to purchase two 512mb modules, and I presume I will have to remove the already installed 256mb one?
I just need a nod of approval really before I go ahead with it! Thanks!:T
Edit to add ----> The modules I would like to buy are PC2700, however a few posts I have read indicate that a PC2100 should be selected. Is there much difference?0 -
A selfish bump

I replied to this many hours ago. I must have neglected to post it.
Just take a look for yourself to see if your current RAM is removable.
You can purchase your memory here
FT64MSD64V6F5 Major - 200 Pin Dimm - SDRAM - 2.5V - DDR - PC2100 (PC-266) - Non-ECC - 512MB Module £22.21 including delivery.0 -
I'd only get one 512 at first 'cause you may not notice much difference. I previously upped from 512 to 1024- couldn't tell any diff. Recently changed the guts of a pc and only one gb of ram turned up instead of the two ordered. I got pc working and the next day installed the second 1gb mem. - couldn't tell!
I think its very much a case of diminishing returns with memory. You will notice a better processor and you will notice dumping unused progs and a clean install. Just my own exp.0
