Planning to move from BT so looking for a more permanent email solution.
Currently using outlook 2016 as my email client so that I can keep my emails readily available. I am looking for the cheapest and safest option i.e. less steps to send/receive email.
The options I can see are:
buy a domain with email forwarding and use gmail or similar,
buy a domain with email hosting,
use a free email service like gmail or outlook or gmx, etc
Obviously, using gmail or similar is free until they start charging but has least steps to send/receive email. Using email forwarding means paying annually for domain name and making sure I own it and am not leasing it, then use gmail or similar to access/send eamil. Paid for email hosting, from the sites I have looked at also requires a domain name to be paid for but seems to rely on the hosting site staying in business.
Any recomendations?
Thanks.

Unless you have particular need for a domain and email forwarding I would just use Gmail or Outlook email or similar, both of which can be used with Outlook on your computer.Retired at age 56 after having "light bulb moment" due to reading MSE and its forums. I purchased my own domain after losing a gmail account for some unknown reason that google wont tell me.
Created the gmail to use to create an android app and use bluestacks to test. Never sent any emails with it but google deleted it.
Thought what would happen if that was my banking email.
Hosting site staying in business?? Simply move to another host.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I have my own domain with email hosting. It's on its third hosting company, as previous ones have ceased to trade or have been "merged".
The domain has stayed registered to me, despite the first company I registered through going out of business. The most you will lose is the remaining period of hosting if you have your own domain. Entry level hosting is not too expensive and gives you a bit of web space to tinker with if you're that way inclined. Most offer POP3 or IMAP mail services - I use a mix of both. My main computer uses a POP3 connection then deletes the mail a set time after it is received. Other devices use IMAP. It is up to me to backup my mail, which I do to my satisfaction, and prefer that to leaving it sitting out there somewhere to potentially get exposed one day.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Having had my own domain and hosting (via 1&1) for 15 years or so I would strongly recommend that path. Not outrageously expensive and has taken me through 3 ISP changes over the years, all seamlessly. As well as somewhere to put my own websites it is also a convenient place for storage.0

Thanks for your replies.
I am thinking the best method for a 'lifetime' email is a domain and email hosting then; possibly 1&1(Ionos).
Cheers.Sorry! Did the middle of my sentence interrupt the beginning of yours!0 -
I have my own domain, but without email hosting. I use a free GMX email account with it.
It's quick and easy to change to a different email provider in future, if GMX goes out of business, or if I want a fully-featured paid hosting plan.
I had to get my ISP to enable me to use their SMTP server to send mail with my own domain. But it works perfectly, and is saves money on email hosting.
However, other networks (away from home) will probably block you from using their SMTP server with your own domain. And I don't think(??) free email providers let you send via your own domain.0 -
I have a domain name and Microsoft exchange online, it's been good for me and Ican access it on all of my devices when out and about.0

I've been using a Yahoo.com email address since 1999 (so 20 years) with no problem.
It's .com as there was no Yahoo.UK back then!0
