Lowell Debt Reply from Prove It Letter

Hi Everyone
A bit unsure of what to do, so hoping someone can help. In a nutshell, being chased by Lowell for an old Sky debt (less than 6 years ago). I thought I had paid everything up before cancelling Sly however Lowell seem to think otherwise. I sent off a prove it letter (via email I admit) and got the following reply. Not sure if this constitutes proof of debt. I do not have access to old Sky statements as thought it was all sorted.
Any ideas on what I should do next?
If it is a true debt, then fine, I will sort it, but really not sure. I have looked at my credit file and there is nothing on there either.
Thanks everyone

Good Afternoon,
Thank you for your email.
I have now removed your contact numbers from our records so that we do not call you. Please allow 48 hours for this to be updated.
Lowell Reference – XXXXXXXXX – Sky UK Ltd – Balance: £139.26
We purchased this account in good faith in the belief that the balance is valid and owing by yourself.
This is in relation to an agreement taken out in your name and details with Sky on 21/02/2014.
The account received payments to the client until 04/12/2014 and the last payment was of £6.48.Tne tariff was DTV SKY+/HD’.
Can you please clarify what you mean by ‘please prove the debt in writing’? Your original agreement with Sky provided them with the right to process your data, or pass this right to a third party, such as Lowell.
On 06/09/2017 we formally notified you that this account had been purchased from Sky and Lowell Portfolio I Ltd is now the legal owner of the debt. (Can not remember receiving anything about this)
As the owner and data controller of this account, Lowell has the right (and responsibility) to report accurate and up-to-date information to the credit reference agencies.
Please let me know how you wish to proceed with this account.
I have placed the account on hold for 14 days to allow you time to get back to us.
Kind Regards,
Lowell Financial, part of Lowell

Hi,
Well there is no physical paper agreement with any TV contract is there, so proof would constitute an account number, linked to your name and address, complete with a full statement of the account, showing debts and credits, any outstanding balance etc.
If you dispute owing anything on the account, then say so, the onus is on Lowell to prove the debt exists, its not up to you to prove it dosent.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Thanks Sourcrates. Will ask for further information such as an account statement showing payments etc.0

A final payment of £6.48 sounds like you (at least believed you) were bringing the balance to zero. A full statement of payments and charges should reveal what went on.
I suspect some sort of fee was added and then the question is - was it in the contract?0 -
They have got back to me and as Sourcrates advised there is no proof of contract, but they have given an account number etc. They have given me a breakdown of sorts saying XYZ for pay per view etc. But no statement and this would need to come from Sky, which they will not provide and needs to come from Sky themselves.
So I guess it is a SAR into Sky. If Sky can not provide this, what would be the next step?
I can not remember this debt, but Lowell just keep saying the same thing. I am not really sure how they can pin the debt down on me with just an account number, balance etc.
With past debt I have known about it, accepted it and dealt with it, but this one is out of the blue and have no idea how to proceed.0 -
If its not your debt, then keep denying it, ultimitly, if Lowell take you to court, you`re defense would be the debt is not yours, then Lowell would have to find proof to say it was, as they seem unable to do this, i would say its unlikley Lowell will get legal with you.
Just put your deniel in writing to Lowell, and leave it at that.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. I'm not sure if it's relevant in your case, but I know PPV with Sky take ages to appear on your account. Usually statement after next.
Do you think that you may have had items added after you thought you'd settled your account???How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.98% of current retirement "pot" (as at end April 2025)0 -
I keep telling Lowell I dispute the debt but they keep coming back to me. Is there a final "I do not accept this debt" letter I can send?0
-
Sea shell out for be a possibility but did not get a statement or anything. Certainly nothing I was made aware of.0

I'm having issues with Lowell too, for a debt I've NEVER even had an account with.
I sent a prove it letter and the advice I've received here is to now ignore them. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.98% of current retirement "pot" (as at end April 2025)0 -
I am concerned if I ignore them then they put a CCJ or default against me. Will be applying for a mortgage next year and have worked so hard to repair it and am worried that Lowell will wreck it in one go0
