Ebay automatic/managed return gone missing. Are parcels insured?

Long time since I returned anything on ebay not sure how it all works these days.

Bought a £180 item from a business seller 30 day returns.

Clicked return button and was offered two services royal mail or collectplus. No option to send it myself or sellers address provided.

Both services seemed cheap for an insured tracked return.

Opted for collectplus as it was the more expensive at no point when booking the parcel was I offered the option to insure the item. I assumed that as ebay knew the value of the item they would automatically select the correct service.

Sent parcel, collectplus showing as delivered.
Seller contacts me to say ebay have told him item has been returned and to refund. But says it wasn't delivered to him and he is investigating with collectplus.

5 days have passed and now ebay are asking if he has refunded yet. He hasn't.

So my question is has this parcel been insured?

Because looking at collectplus pricing structure I wasn't charged enough to pay for insurance.

And if parcel has gone missing who's going to loose out me, the seller, ebay or collectplus?

  • If Collectplus is showing as delivered, you shouldn't have any problems getting your money back.

Ring eBay or escalate through the case if you are able (don't close it by mistake).

You will get your refund and the seller can take it up with eBay/the carrier.

He just refunded unprompted and sent a nice message stating that it had been located hidden behind a bin in a neighbours garden.

So do you know was the parcel insured?

Because all collectplus insured services require a signature and this one clearly didn't get one.

I was charged £4.60 by ebay the correct postage charge should have been closer to £8.

I'm interested as I'm about to start selling again myself and I don't want to be on the wrong end of one of these situations.

Would the seller have been reimbursed by ebay/collectplus?

He has refunded, that's the end of it. But to help answer your queries.

Had he not have refunded, eBay would have done and whacked him for the fees with a defect, quite an incentive to refund.

The parcel may not have been insured, I don't send most of my parcels with insurance as I build them into my business model and let's face it a parcel that costs you £100 from me, will likely have cost me less than £40ish.

I'm not sure what you mean by "correct postage".

The short version - All you need to know as a seller is that if a buyer opens a case it will be for INR or SNAD. With INR you need to prove delivery (and you should have added the POD at time of dispatch) and with SNAD, you are likely to have to refund the buyer the item and returns postage. You can chose the postage but you must upload a label (prepaid) within 8 days otherwise eBay will do it and bill you.
