Social Housing - Wanting to Move to Another Area

I have been trying for ages to do a mutual exchange through all the usual exchange websites but have so far been unsuccessful. Does anyone know if it would be possible to apply to at least get on the waiting list of another council area directly, so at least I would be on the list or is it completely impossible to do that from another area?

You could probably get on a waiting list if it wasn't an area where there was pressure on housing but that doesn't mean that the council will house you. Where I live you can only get on the waiting list if you have lived in the area for a certain length of time.

Some councils have an open list, or allow you to sign up to their rehousing service as long as you have a proven local connection to the area through an immediate family members, employment, etc. From my experience, these tend to be less desirable areas where the stock is high and demand is relatively low.

I would start by contacting the local authorities or housing associations which cover the areas you would consider, and ask them each individually. Each one will have a slightly different policy and different criteria, so you may find that some will accept you.

We were on waiting lists in three different counties at one point but as others have said it does vary from council to council - certainly no harm in asking
