Buildings insurance when renting

Does anyone know who is responsible for buildings insurance if you're renting a property? I don't want to shell out if I don't need to!

Almost always the owner (or freeholder if it's a flat). They'd never risk leaving it to the tenant if they had any sense anyway - what if it didn't happen! You lose the ancillary benefit of being house during a natural disaster, but you can just stop paying the rent and go elsewhere...Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!0

I'd advice checking the lease carefully and confirming the answer with the landlord, but as the above reply says I can't ever see it being anyone other than the owner. You should always ensure that you have contents insurance though, that covers you for accidental damage.0

As far as I know, in the AST contract it should mention somewhere that the landlord
'will keep the property insured against fire and other usual comprehensive risks as long as
insurance cover is available.'As a tenant, you are not responsible for providing this sort of cover but you should insure your own personal property inside the house such as computers etc.0 -
It might also be worth the tenant insuring the LLs property against damage caused to it by the tenant e.g. washing machine floods kitchen ..... tenant's insurance would pay for damage to LLs property.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac
