If cell A1 contains a date before today how can I make cells B1 B2 B3 change from being coloured red to be coloured green?
e.g date in cell A1 is 1st May 2019 and cells B1 B2 B3 are red but when I open the spreadsheet on 1st May I want the cells B1 B2 B3
to be coloured green.

Try:
Red cells formula =$A$1>TODAY() {red if future date]
Green cells formula =$A$1<=TODAY() {green if today or in past}
or something similar(Although I could be wrong, I often am.)0
