Insulating Existing Concrete Floor

Good afternoon

I was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice I have solid concrete floors with cement screed on top and they are cold very cold so I was thinking if I was to remove the 75 mm screed and put 50 mm king-span down straight onto the concrete then a layer of 5 mm ply followed by 22 mm chip-board interlocking floor boards would this have a dramatic affect on the floor temp and would the floor be strong enough ( Sitting room ) , I wanted to put 75 mm king-span but because of the fire place harve I am restricted on how high I can go . Or could anyone advice me a better and cheaper way of achieving the same result a warmer floor

Thanks Colin

It wouldn't be strong enough at all. The insulation needs concrete over it too, or it will feel like sponge.

    Change the floor covering?

  • Thanks for your reply , I could lay 2" by 2" timbers and put the insulation in between that should stop any sponginess but do you think I will benefit enough for it to be worth doing

Do you mean they are currently cold to walk on barefoot or create a cold feeling in the room ?

The heat loss through a solid floor is really quite low. It’s the last thing you need to upgrade. Warm covering, carpet.

Or even screed an electric floor heat mat followed by appropriate laminate flooring or tiles .

You can get electric floor mats that doesn't heat up room just makes floor warm - you still need your radiators.

    Welcome to MSE. :)

Decent rug with a couple of layers of decent rug underlay makes a lot of difference to the feel. As does wearing slippers with a thick sole. You can also get plug-in electric mats to heat the rug.

Thank you to everybody for responding sorry I have not replied to anyone I have been away for a few days , After reading through the replies I think I will try a heated matt first as least expensive if that doesn`t work I think a floating floor which was my original thought but I would have to take the cement screed up as I do not have any room to raise the floor level which would buy me 3" ( 75mm ) I hope
