British Gas: Energy Plus Protection Green May 2020
Hi all,
So I was looking for a new tariff as mine with EDF is due, and the cheapest one with them is a 30% increase over last year. I had in mind changing to Bulb, but running some more quotes today, I came across the following:
Energy Plus Protection Green May 2020:
Gas: 16.53 per day and 3.093 per kWh
Electricity: 20.44 per day and 14.579 kWh
To be honest, this seems quite a reasonable price for what you can find out there today. Any idea of how come Brittish Gas is offering something so cheap. Could this mean that prices might come down for next month and everyone will follow suit?
Cheers

British Gas, like many large suppliers, offer a whole range of tariffs with varying terms, prices etc.
The one you refer to even comes with a free 1 year central heating, plumbing, drains and home electrical cover for one year.(unless you already have a BG 'Homecare' insurance product. )
One thing that may put some people off is that you must agree to have smart meters installed (unless you already have them) - no additinal charge for this of course.
As it's not available direct, this is presumably aimed at attracting new customers (although existing customers can transfer via a comparison site too) Use the MSE CEC, and get £25 cashback too! (£12.50 per fuel switched)

Would not class as CHEAP .0

Would not class as CHEAP .
MSE would!...It was already cheapest of the Big 6 firms, and last week BG cut the price of its cheapest tariff for a second time this month and improved the insurance many get with it.The Energy Plus Protection Green May 2020 tariff is the cheapest big six deal on the market on typical use, including £25 MSE cashback.
And the OP has found it to be cheaper than Bulb Energy too!

Thanks for this. Is BG a decent enough supplier? I've never been with them.
Also, how do I check the MSE email, I have just joined so don't have anything.
Do you think other companies will follow suit and reduce prices?

... although if the stated 12million existing recipients is to be believed, then, on average, someone in your close family is probably already receiving it, if not your wider circle of friends.
British Gas is one of the oldest companies in the world, with a history stretching back over 200 years, so they can't be too bad.
Up until not so long ago, everyone in the UK who was supplied with gas bought it from British Gas (or Scottish Gas, etc)
There's a link to BG feedback thread on MSE in the tariff detail within the CEC
Note that this is a fixed tariff. If you are happy with the price, then go for it in the surety that price will not change until May 2020.
If you want to take the risk of prices moving, then choose a variable tariff. Note that prices can go up as well as down. I'f I knew which way energy prices were to go in the next 12 months, I wouldn't have to wait until next year to become a millionaire.
Note that Bulb Energy are already over £26million in debt, and their investors will be looking for that to be reversed in due course I'm sure.0
