  • Had a letter from Sky Protect asking for £138 to renew. I rang them, said it was too expensive and they offered to close my current contract & set me up as a new customer with the same cover but for 6 months at £4.99 then 6 months at £9.99 = just under £90. That's nearly 50 quid cheaper, just for a phone call.

Did you actually pay them the £90? If so I honestly don't understand why.

Although you haggled them down from £138 to under £90, I recon you are still getting a lousy deal, if your Sky kit bust up they ‘only’ charge £65, if you refuse to pay anything and threaten to leave , they fix it for ‘free’, and as others have said a second hand box can be had for peanuts, and can easily be paired to your viewing card.( you probably could get 9 HD boxes for your £90)
I don’t know if you were expecting posts congratulating you on an a masterful negotiation, but I’m afraid ( IMHO ) you just went from an absolutely shocking offer to a slightly better but still awful deal
  • I might add they do also cover my laptop for accidental damage & breakdown, which is worth rather more than my sky box

I know the blurb states they cover one other additional item, but do you have to specify what that item is ( a laptop in your case )
if only that quoted item is covered , how much would a single item insurance policy cost , £90 seems a lot for one item, even if it’s a laptop.

Its quite possible your home insurance already covers accidental damage, as well as theft away from the home etc, and not just one item , but all your valuables, and if a claim were made sometimes ‘duplicate’ insurers refuse to pay out if an item is already covered ( in other words you wouldn’t get 2 laptops, 1 from your home insurance and one from Sky Protect, if you ( for example ) dropped it down the stairs.
To be clear , I’m not saying Sky protect would not pay out, if they could argue the item was already covered on another problem policy, perhaps someone may post their own experiences of making a claim for something other that the Sky equipment, I’m not suggesting they generally don’t honour claims , just curious if people have had other items replaced or been refunded the price of the item ( new for old ? )

If you are happy with the cover you get and the price you paid , then that’s fair enough, but I think it’s fair to say most comments on Sky Protect value aren’t positive

I still have 3 months contract left for Sky TV and I have an issue with the dish as it says no signal for both inputs. I've tried restarting the box etc.I have Sky HD not Sky Q (not interested in that).

Should I take the insurance and ring them to come and fix it and maybe cancel the insurance in a few months ? It is £9 a month.

Or if I just ring Sky is the £65 a call out fee and you have to pay for additional work ? They may fix the dish but the box could pack up in a few months.

I could leave it till the renewal phone call and then threaten to leave knowing they will probably send an engineer for free but I will also be haggling for a better price (only have the basic Sky package)

    Any ideas ?
