Are the new fire &smoke alarms actually wired in not battery. If that is the only known change it might be worth a check!

Does anyone really need to use the washing machine and tumble dryer daily. They cost the same to run when half empty as when full so make sure that it's full. Don't do half loads (although I'm still trying to teach my wife this).

Same with the dishwasher, I can get a lot more stuff in in by loading it properly rather than just chucking it all in - it also cleans it better.

Save water by not letting it run down the sink, especially stuff that you've paid good money to heat. Dunno if you've got electric showers but they can use 160watts/minute, so it doesn't take long to ramp up the consumption if you have a lots of them or stand there for ages.

A daily 10 minute shower could use around 50kwh/month - it may not sound a lot but if three or four of you are doing it then it soon mounts up.

It's also worthwhile turning off the TV, computers and games consoles when not in use, don't just leave them on standby - some games consoles are very power hungy when just sitting idle.
Switching off a modern TV is all but pointless. Even large screen TVs use about 0.5W/hour in standby so switching off at the wall only saves about 60p per year.

    yes. Remember households are different.

Sure it was said with tongue in cheek, but unexplained 20kWh/day consumption is not going to be the result of leaving the PC and games console on or drying an extra towel or two in the tumble dryer.

Theft from an adjoining loft space is not such a far-fetched possibility and lights/fans needed for a farm in the loft would account for the level of consumption that's being described.

Embarrassing schoolboy error coming up

I went in and checked the meter myself today and I had completely forgotten they used to be on a British Gas freetime tariff, so there are a couple of readings on the meter. Despite having photos of the meter readings, I never clocked that one says rate 1 import and the other says total import - yep, rate 1 has been correctly used for the opening reading, but total has been used for the latest reading.

The correct reading is 10876 kwh, which means they've used 355 kwh, not over 800 kwh, which is a bit more like it!

Pass me the dunce hat, but at least the panic is over. Thanks to everyone for their help :D
