Best Free CMS?

Options
Hello, I am looking to change my CMS system on my server for my website.

I deliberately chose DotNetNuke and hosted on a Windows server.... to my subsequent annoyance. I find it doesn't really work how I want a CMS to work. Building up the modular pages is a really long-winded and exceedingly slow process.

I now want to port all my info across to a php/MySQL based free CMS system hosted on a Linux server. Off the top of my head I can't remember which ones are usually available in CPanel, although I think I might be standardising on CPanel shortly from the hosting end, so if it is available by default in CPanel, I'd see this as a big benefit.

So which do you consider to be the best - and why?

The features I like about DNN are:
- members area with capture system to register
- statistics reporting is quite good
- wysiwig and html ability
- has a links module where I can see how many clicks something has had (although no way to do this, say, in the middle of an html piece

Features I dislike are:
- lack of many free layouts (such my site sucks)
- long-winded to create a page
- seems to have issues running some scripts in what should be the right sort of modules
- no automatic site map
- severe lack of support for non-developers

Thanks for your feedback.

Thanks ... I know I did about 5 years ago. Not been back there since!
Isn't it odd how you go to some sites once and if they've not been that good at that time you tend to skip over them in google results ever more (or is that just me being picky)

    I'll give it another look.

The main issue is, it takes so long to set up and populate and test a CMS that it could take months to go through them all to find one I was happy with. Over the years I've tried a number, unsuccessfully. I guess I should bite the bullet at some point and employ a developer to make the changes I need from the start rather than living with something that I know could be better if only it ....

You can try them all online on opensourcecms.com

They have a demo of each one with an admin and user account set up that you can log in with. They restore each one very hour or something.

Check the reviews to see others opinions as they highlight any shortcomings
  • I have always found http://www.postnuke.com/ to be a good CMS.
