Why is it that as soon as Crashy says anything about prices potentially dropping there's always someone trying to shut them down, as if the differing of opinion is not acceptable... Prices are insane, especially in the south east and need to drop, none of this is sustainable.

Because thats pretty much all that Crashy says.
And he doesn't say "potentially" he's not that guarded, he's always forecasting an imminent fall or a fall now, , or if the price hasnt fallen then it will be transaction volumes dropping and if neither have happened then its just a sign that they will drop soon because obviously they need to rise before crashing.

What is "this" ? Need to drop for what reason?

Did you really join the forum today so you could defend Crashy? Sincere question.

I've been lurking for a few months on and off and have been meaning to create an account and get stuck in, but yeah, this was the trigger. Some of you have been particularly harsh with him in some of the posts I've read, and for what? for saying that house prices can go down as well as up? seems like he's touched a nerve with certain people...

For what reason?! I don't know, perhaps that house prices accelerating away from wages might not be a sustainable model? That my kids are probably not going to be able to afford a house when they grow up if things continue as they are? Because houses shouldn't go up in a year more than most people earn, in this capitalist society where hard work should be rewarded? Do you seriously think that ever increasing house prices, beyond inflation and wage growth is actually a good thing for society as whole, or just those that were lucky enough to buy a house when they were relatively.cheap?

    Just a disclaimer, I'm a home owner.

I am definitely holding on even if it means putting up with a loss for time being. Keeping it as university funds when kids grow up.

Yes, I do appreciate the prices can fall.

What do you mean by ‘university funds’?

That is odd isn't it?, Very American? Its More likely to be used as a deposit for the kids first home, Or they could live in it at cheap rent to save up.

He says he is a higher tax payer. But its "only" 5k if its means tested.

"And students get a living loan too, but the thing they don’t tell you is it’s means tested, and therefore the gap between the full loan and the amount you get is effectively a parental contribution. Why a parental contribution? Because if they’re under 25, except in very rare circumstances, the means testing is based on family income which is a proxy for saying, “parental income”.
So yes, while they’re old enough to vote, old enough to marry, old enough to die for our country, students under the age 25 under the student finance system are not treated as independent adults."

It is what the Price Police always try to do, it gets mentioned on this thread that EA`s are active on forums as well

    https://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/property/2951257-Anyone-else-struggling-to-sell-in-London

...but we have to remember that during a massive property bubble when millions have been suckered into cheap but very large debt, there are going to be lot`s of vested interests trying to influence online forums because they don`t want the property market to stall, whether that be EA`s who don`t want people staying out of the market as prices drop, or the newly indebted at peak prices, or people who bought some time ago and fancy cashing in their windfall some time soon to maybe downsize or whatever. Potential buyers would be wise to let the political dust settle before making a move at the moment IMO.

It's amusing when Trashy Time calls others on here 'Price Police'. The guy who spends his life patrolling these and other forums for any mention of house prices.

since this thread is about someone asking for advice on how to calculate their tax, neither you nor Crashy's posts have any relevance whatsoever

for whatever reason you decided to derail this thread, well done, OP has vanished and this thread is now descending into the nonsense propagated on the house price crash forum where you may find the sort of discussion you seem to want.

Ask crashy for further info, he is a founding member of it, and doubtless they will soon have a link on there to this thread congratulating themselves on how this thread is now wrecked.
Statistically of course prices will fall, it is called an economic cycle. But your or his ability to predict it is as close to your comment's relevance to the OP's question

I apologise for assisting in the thread going a bit off topic, you're right, I have !!!!!! all in the way of advice for the OP. Just get frustrated with the "HPI forever" narrative, as if it's just a given that it's a good thing...
