Tesco Redundancy

Options
Hi my wife is being made redundant after 3 years in Tesco as they are not having stock controllers any more.

All of the younger staff have managed to secure similar or slightly less hours but my wife and one other over 50 are being made redundant.

I'm not too fussed as she was a Manager before and is just working 27.5 hours Mon-Fri at Tesco's pants hourly rate (same job and slightly nicer hours)

The thing that is odd is that a store 20 miles down the road has just advertised for a 27.5 stock controller mon - fri.

This seems a little strange as she was told the stock controller role is now redundant.

She presented the job advertisement to her line manager and he couldn't really answer and just said he would feed it back.

Do you think I can a claim after she has left for unfair dismissal?

Surely the simple solution is to apply for this role (always assuming the '20 miles' isn't an issue for her)

I'm hoping this is a slip of the keyboard - 'you' can't claim for anything - what does she want to do ?

20 miles would add 1.5 - 2 hours to here day as the road is a nightmare.

I think you are wrong. Redundancy is dismissal. If she has been unfairly dismissed you can Claim. I know of a colleague that was made redundant and other positions weren't made available to him. When he claimed his Redundancy payment was increased from 10k to 20k. This was some years ago and the laws may have changed since then.

Just FYI the sentence wasn't a slip of the keyboard a slip would be like typing 'wasn't' instead of 'want'.

In which case good luck - 20 miles is likely to be within the guidelines for suitable alternative so if they offered her this she'd probably have to accept or lose redundancy so be careful what you (or she given it's her that's actually employed) wish for.

I think he was refering to the fact you asked if YOU could claim, not your wife. He said YOU couldnt claim anything which is true

Ahh OK I see thanks. As you can imagine we are a bit annoyed. When I say I mean we as I will have to do the leg work.

To be honest k3lvc's post wasn't very helpful at all. My wife hasn't been offered any other positions and that was my point, also there aren't any 'guidelines' on what is reasonable miles only that:

"However, it may be reasonable to say no if it involves a difficult journey or affects personal matters like children’s education." but like I say this is iirrelavent as she hasn't been offered this.

My point is she is being made redundant because the position of stock controller is being removed by Tesco (along with counter staff). Then Tesco advertised for new Stock Controllers.

Just FYI I am employed too. :)
