"Home Protect " High excess clauses on house insurance

Be aware Home Protect can have costly excess clauses. ( approx. 5 times higher than other companies we tried) . .
Money Saving Expert has always been good for info and direction but this time a warning might be needed to add to the information/signposting. We contacted Home Protect as an insurer that might be able to assist if having difficulty gaining house insurance. Since 2015 we have had two separate water leaks due to failed water tank and pipes. All have been replaced and fixed so there is no further expectation of any difficulty but insurance is difficult to get due to having had 2 claims. Home Protect at first were nice and offered a good price approx.£200 lower but on receiving the full details they had put an excess of £4250 for water escape and £5000 for flood. We have never had a flood from coastal or river etc havng owned the property for 20 years . The gentleman who we addressed our queries to was most unhelpful and would not request this be reviewed.for any reason. The excess offered by other companies range around £1,000 and no flood excess. Just be aware their offer looks good at first but read the full details as it could prove very expensive in the long run. Suffice to say we have not taken out the insurance with them
Be aware of possible/probable high excess from this company. :(:(

I'd also warn others using Home Protect to check their policy documents very carefully.

I took out a policy a couple of months ago for a house we'd just purchased that we were going to spend a few weeks renovating before we moved in. I declared it as currently unoccupied.

When I got the policy documents through they had added so many endorsements (because of the unoccupied status) that the house and contents were basically not covered for anything except fire! I'd expected a few endorsements like for example not being covered for escape of water or having a higher excess for it, but no they had blanket excluded just about everything completely.

Needless to say I cancelled the policy the day after and used a different insurer which actually turned out cheaper.
