Washing machine broken glass!

Hi I hope someone can help

Yesterday my washing machine while on one of its last spins started making a terrible noise (crack) and I walked in to notice a large crack appearing on the glass part of the door. I quickly stopped the washer to avoid it getting any worse.
On inspecting it afterwards I noticed the crack was almost end to end and feels very fragile. Also a hole has appeared at the top of it. Obviously very concerned from a safety point of view as if id left it any longer that could have been a lot worse.
Now I have a washing machine (4 years old) that I cannot use and through no fault of my own
I live alone so only use the washer once or twice a week and im meticulous when placing clothes in there as in not to overfill and also checking for any foreign objects.
I checked the clothes that came out of the washer and nothing in there as expected to cause any damage.
Im very shocked a washing machine break in this way.
Any advice on how to go forward with this please? Its out of warranty but feel I have a genuine case of a product that has failed to live up to safety standards as well as failing after what is relatively a short life based on the amount of usage.
Thanks for any help

Contact the retailer of the item.

After 4 years they are within their rights to ask you to provide a report stating that the glass fault is down to an inherent manufacturing fault of the washing machine.

if the report does show this, then they can replace it, repair your washing machine, OR offer you a refund which can take into account your 4 years use. This will vary depending on the price and expected lifetime of the washing machine (for example, a £100 washing machine would not be expected to last as long as a £1000 washing machine)

So, for going forward, speak to the company that sold you the washing machine. I wouldnt mention safety, it doesnt sound particularly unsafe to me currently, no one has been hurt. Your shock and safety concerns do not need to be mentioned. You are claiming the item is faulty and want to claim because of that, thats all.

After this length of time owning the machine, you're going to find it very difficult if not impossible to get anywhere under your consumer rights.

Can you just buy a replacement door? Try https://www.espares.co.uk/ for example. It's going to be much easier, and possibly cheaper anyway.

My cracked WM glass was due to an item in a pocket .
As said 4 year old they are liable to only give you a small amount as a refund . Unless that is the glass is replacable .
When claiming under Consumer Rights as should have lasted longer . Retailer is within their rights to ask you to verify your claim . This would be via an independant report that you pay for in the first instance .
Personnally i would give up if asked to do that and write it off or see if local WM repair can fix at a reasonable price .

For the cost of a replacement door (or even just a part of a door) I doubt it's worthwhile trying to put together a case proving it was an inherent fault.

The portal on a washing machine door is glass? I've always assumed it was a form of clear plastic.
  • I would't have thought that plastic would be a good material to use simply because of the range of chemicals that might be used in the machine.
Detergent and softener would probably be okay but over time, things like stain removers and bleach based products could end up degrading the plastic and making it opaque or brittle.

Replacing this using the manufacturer will be an expensive exercise. Use a local service engineer.

4 years can be a long time for some manufacturers

Chances are the door is glass on the inside and plastic on the outside.

Have a look on https://www.espares.co.uk - there's a good chance they'll have the part for your machine, and they often have videos explaining how to do the replacement yourself.

The glass bowls seem to be around £20 - £30 on Ebay. Quite easy to replace.
