income tax

Hello - I hope this is the right section for this question, and I hope someone can help with this question.

So, as of the last financial year I was earning £42,848 and I have just received a 3% pay rise, so I now earn £44,133 as of my April pay-packet. I had worked out that the extra would be £1285 before tax which breaks down to £107.08 per month - now, I expect to pay tax on that amount - however, I noticed that my tax and NI has increased by £90, which means I see just £17 of my pay rise - does this seem right? so the government have taken 84% of my pay rise? I don't understand as I am a basis rate tax payer - am I being over charged or is this just how it is?
appreciate any guidance...

To see what is going on you need to give full details.
From last payslip last year and from first payslip this year the following....
    Taxable gross
    Tax paid
    NI paid
    Tax code
Tax basis (usually follows code eg 0,1,X,cumulative, non cumulative)
    Taxable gross to date
    Tax paid to date

I don't think this website calculates the tax correctly in all circumstances. It works OK if you have a normal tax code ie 1250L but fails when you use a K tax code. The personal allowance is ignored. Also, it would appear that if you key in any allowances, these are also ignored.

Try using this one which I think is better

There is only one tax calculator that will always give the correct answer (assuming you enter the correct details) that is here....
    http://payecalculator.hmrc.gov.uk/PAYE0.aspx

The problem with the OP is that we only have very limited details. On these limited details there appears to be some sort of problem and any tax calculator will only either confirm the figures or not confirm them, either way the OP is none the wiser. If they choose to give the details then someone will be able to explain what is happening.
  • thanks for your help... so my tax code for last year was 1185L and my new payslip is 1250L.
my tax last year was 12,758 Plus 4,502 in NI payments.
And this year its just what I have paid in my April pay - £517 in Tax and £349 in NI payments. is it worth mentioning that I also pay £300 to my pension/ month and I have £50 taken off for Child care vouchers?

Your NI is correct but your tax seems too high, should be more like £457.
  • Thank you - looks like I need to get in touch with the Inland Revenue -

So my total pay in April was £3,677.83
I then take off £50 for childcare vouchers leaving £3627.83
