Door window smashed by accident what are my rights ?

Hi everyone,
Yesterday morning, a van flicked a bolt on my door glass when he drove over it : my external door glass is completely smashed. This is just an accident and the driver didn't probably realised what happened.
We found out what happened when we checked our CCTV. The police has been called, and now I don't know what to do : do I have to contact the van's driver company ? Is it possible to arrange a claim through their and our insurance or is it not worth it ? It was a decorative glass so quite expensive to replace...
Any advice will be much appreciated.
Thank you

Not sure why you called the police - not really their issue.
Does the CCTV show the glass being broken or just a van driving past/off? As in, is there any proof that specific van broke the door? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Hi,
I've called the Police before I found out it was an accident as we had bad neighbors and had issues before.
Yes we can see what happened on CCTV the bolt flown in the air when the van drove on it .0 -
I can’t see how the van driver can be at fault for running over something he would not have even noticed. You have no rights as such, this was just an unfortunate accident and no one is to blame apart from perhaps who ever dropped the bolt there.0

I never has to deal with this before and never claimed through insurance so I just wanted to see if some people on here had a similar issue and how it went through with home insurance. It's nobody's fault like you said but I end up with an expensive glass to replace.0

Not if you are covered by your insurance for accidental damage (which is what this is!)didineviki wrote: »It's nobody's fault like you said but I end up with an expensive glass to replace.0 -

What makes you think that this is the van driver's fault? The fact that he drove over a bolt does not make him liable.didineviki wrote: »It's nobody's fault like you said but I end up with an expensive glass to replace.

You can't hold the van driver responsible for this I'm afraid, it's just a freak accident.
Last year I was playing football in goals. Someone volleyed hard at me and I deflected the ball with my leg, it sailed high over the fence and completely smashed the windscreen on a brand new Audi passing by. Literally a million to one.
The guy wasn't impressed and wanted us to pay for it. I just told him he'd have to claim off his insurance. That's what it's for.0 -
Thank you for your answers, I will have a look to see if it worth it to claim through my insurance0

Must be a very good CCTV system to see a bolt flying through the air and smashing the glass.
What system is it? Love to see an example of the quality of a moving image.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
