EDF says we need a new electricity meter ...
Options
Hello. Last month, we received a letter from EDF saying:
"We need to replace your electricity meter"
"Your electricity meter is reaching the end of its lifespan, so we need to replace it as soon as possible."
"We're legally required to replace meters when they reach their certified lifespan."
Possibly I'm being overly suspicious, but it seems like a big coincidence that it should have arrived so soon after the limit for installing 1st-generation meters expired. EDF have been trying to persuade us to install a smart meter for years and we've been resisting like crazy, so I'm wondering how genuine the urgency is, or whether it's more of an attempt once again to get us to install a smart meter so they can meet their targets. (The current meter *is* marked "London Electricity plc", BTW)
Would appreciate any thoughts ...

You're being overly suspicious. The process and letter will be entirely automated once the meter reaches the age at which it needs to be replaced.1

Meters are normally certified for between 15-25 years so quite likely it needs replacing.
And really people shouldn't have any problems with getting a Smets 2 meter1
