Booked a Cottage on Expedia unable to obtain a refund

I booked a cottage in Cornwall on Expedia's website. It said free cancellation within a certain period of time. I cancelled it but it appears the deal was actually with a company called HomeAway. After messages back and forth Expedia say "we would request you to please file a chargeback with the bank." So I don't get a refund - I have to claim it back from my bank. Has anyone else had the problem? If so how was it resolved?

A chargeback means the bank reclaim the money from the company so you do get a refund.0
