Everything I need to drive away from a dealership?

Hi, so when I eventually buy my first car from the dealership, in order to drive it away I need insurance, MOT, registered with the DVLA and vehicle tax. That's all right?

Can I do all these things in one go over the phone or is it better to buy the car, do all those things at home online and then go pick the car up? Can imagine it being a bit of a nightmare trying to do everything in the parking lot of the dealership. Does the dealership take care of certain things?

A dealer should MOT a vehicle. If there is no (or a very short) MOT I would think twice unless you know about cars.

You can do all the others at the dealers. You may want to insure it beforehand. Some dealers will give a few days insurance with a vehicle to enable you to drive away easily.

How long is considered "very short" for MOT?

What about vehicle tax and registering it? Can that be done on the same day as well?

Personally I would want at least 6 months mot on a cheap vehicle. The DVLA can be done online at the dealers. Doing that will enable you to tax it.

You want to purchase insurance as far in advance as you can, since buying on the day is expensive.

I purchased from a dealership last week and they did the tax online when I went to collect, as you need the V5c to do it.

The dealership will make it clear what you need to do and when.

I've bought several cars from a local dealer over the years - because I trust them, their prices are reasonable and I've always had good service from them. Their standard policy for used cars is they'll put a new MOT on it if the existing one has less than 6 months left. They also offer to tax it for me - I do have to pay the fee for the tax on top of whatever price we've agreed on for the car, because they don't do it as standard, they just offer to do the "paperwork", such as it is these days. To be honest it take very little time to do it there and then online, but it just means I can turn up on the agreed date, pick up the keys and drive off. Insurance - as others have said it's pretty easy to sort out the insurance a week or so in advance, you just need to know the registration number. Or some dealers will give you a week's insurance as part of the deal.

Most dealers will give you the option of a short term insurance policy - usually you ring a number and insure the new car for 5 days or so allowing you to sort out proper insurance. However nowadays its easy to simply switch your existing insurance or take a new policy out - as soon as you have the reg number you can do this. And start it from the date you pick up your new car. If you are changing cars then they will set the changeover date so you can drive both your old and new cars on that date.

They should sort out the registration documents etc....
