Is this artex?

Hello everyone

Am I right that this is artex (or similar) on the walls of my living room? I would like to get it checked for asbestos if so.

I think it looks more like two different Anaglypta- type textured wallpapers, possibly painted

Looks more like anaglypta-type embossed wallpaper to me. Look for seams between the strips of paper?

Artex was seldom applied to walls (the sharp relief edges hurt when brushed against bare skin). Does it 'feel' smooth or?

When I moved in, I assumed it was anaglypta wallpaper. But last night I was looking at it, and realized can't see any seams... Unless they have been painted over so well that they are invisible.

So I wondered if it was artex or similar.

It is smooth and pleasant to the touch, feels nice and bumpy.

The bedrooms are all done in anaglypta, but there the seams between the strips are quite obvious.

If it is Artex, which is doesn't look like, you can steam is off carefully and bag it, label it and council can take it for free. Apparently steaming stops dust spores from it, id still ventilate well and buy a mask.

If not get an asbestos expert in. I have asbestos on my ceiling artex and was planning on doing this soon. But as with anything be careful.

Definitely anaglypta, probably had several coats of paint. If you look very closely you can see a join in the top section, about a third of the way along from the left.
  • We've just had five artex ceilings tested. One came back positive. We used a company called Envirochem and took the samples ourselves, so it was quite cheap. I think it is about £15/£20 for the first sample, and £5 per sample thereafter. We had 10 things altogether to test so the "£5 thereafter bit" really worked out well for us :)

It's definitely paper of some kind. It has a regular pattern repeat.

I have seen some very skilled (if awful!) examples of the artex artist's art, but none has been skilled enough to manage repeat patterns as accurate as those.

Besides, I had the top one in my room when renting as a student....in a nice shade of turquoise!

    Hi all

Just wanted to revisit this and share my experience in case anyone comes across it looking for options for asbestos testing.

Environchem were exceptionally helpful and were the cheapest as well. Not often you can say that :) I took ten samples in all and it cost £70. I had a whole bunch of questions both before and after the samples were tested, and they were extremely helpful. Great customer service. They were also willing to do an additional (later) test for free when one of the samples proved inconclusive due to the way I'd taken it.

Just always be sure to follow the safety procedures if self sampling!

    Cheers
