Not sure where the best place to post this question is so apologies if this is the wrong section.

I have a premium bond my Mother bought in November 1956 it has never won a prize! I'm just wondering if anyone has an older bond that's never been chosen?

The chances of a single bond winning are small - but it will still be in the draw every month.

It's therefore not unusual even for an old bond to have never won anything.

I have one from the early 1960s that's never won either, but I live in hope....

It's overwhelmingly likely that a single bond wins nothing, even over a long time - based on current volumes of bonds and prizes, only about one in 40 individual bonds would typically be expected to win any prize over 60ish years worth of draws. Returns will naturally have varied over time but the fundamental point remains that the odds of winning anything really are vanishingly small for holders of individual bonds.

So, the answer to your question will be that the vast majority of bonds of that vintage (or any other) won't have won anything, i.e. yours is the norm rather than the exception....

I have £18 worth of PBs, eligible since 1/1/1957. Never won anything but I keep them for sentimental reasons:D

FWIW in todays money that was near enough £25 then in today's money, so you've pretty much lost it all :D

In the stock market, its hard to determine but I'd guess it would easily be around £250 now had it been put in say F&C

If it is literally a single bond worth £1 then it's not surprising it hasn't won anything - odds of a prize are 24,500:1 so it should win on average roughly once every 2,000 years.
  • Likewise because it was my Mums I hold on to it. I plan to give it to my grandson....maybe sometime in future generations it might win something!:j
