Unknown bank credit

£500 has just been deposited in my account, an account I don't give to anyone who's owe me money, and my bank (Clydesdale) say they cannot identify who it's from.
It's just a long number and 'Giro'
I'm not on any form of universal credits/benefits.
What do I do to find out who it's from and if it's actually mine??

Odd that your bank says they can't help.
The sending bank, at least, should know their customer. And your bank ought to be able to pursue your enquiry, if only as a protection from money laundering.
I'd suggest a firm request to them for assistance.0 -
I'd ask the bank to investigate if you're not expecting it (in which case it's probably not yours). I know someone who had £800 paid into his account, he spent it but was later told that he had to repay it.
The bank should know if that's a cash payment, or if someone transferred it into your account. It could be possible someone used the wrong sort code or account number (not likely, but possible). Check with your employer too.
Either way, Clydesdale should be able to investigate and find out where it came from.0 -

Did you by any chance set up any savings/investment recently?
I sent up some NS&I income bonds.
Then I saw deposits into the current account saying counter credit.
This completely threw me as I thought it meant someone paying in over the counter.
However it turned out to be monthly interest from the income bonds.
I wouldn’t expect that to be generally a round figure but thought I’d mention it in case it rang any bells.0 -
Just on the odd chance asking them to investigate this further freezes your account, make sure you have a suitable backup banking arrangement in place. Otherwise just keep it in your account (but don't spend it). Eventually the bank will return it to where it came from if possible0

I don’t think the bank can just take money from your account.
If someone claimed it was accidental then couldn’t just take their word for it without asking the OP as that would be dead easy fraud.0 -

A Giro could be a Standing Order. These won't necessarily have sending account details in the transactions.0 -
Overpaid tax? Premium Bond win? Lottery win?0

It's nothing to do with your missing PayPal transfer is it?0

It's just been processed as a Bank Giro Credit.
It could be a paper HMRC tax refund, dividend payment or any similar paper based credit sent directly to Clydesdale Bank. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
