Own up, who has paid me ?

When I checked my account on the net this morning to see if my erstwhile employer had rewarded me for my labours, I noticed that a payment had been made into my account today for £30-18. I was not expecting anything of this nature so I checked the 14 digit against all the a/cs which pay me through this bank but there was nothing which even resembled it.
I popped into the bank dinner time and queried it with them. They said that they were unable to say who had made the payment !
I find this a little hard to believe, Is it really impossible to find out who my sponsor is in these days of money laundering legislation ? I suspect that it is not a political slush fund or mafia drug money as I subscribe to neither.
Any ideas ?

Was there any clues whatsoever? Name or just numbers. Could it be something like tax credits?

hey thats mine!!!! :rotfl:
it is entirely possible that whoever sent the payment didnt supply a name and therefore the branch wouldnt know who it is but that should be able to tell you at least the sortcode it came from and from that the bank it came from who could then investigate a little further for you.
its a bit roundabout but can be done.
whats the "14 digits" you refer to?

I don't claim for anything tax wise and keep a running total week wise on gross, tax and N.I (I'm 14p up on tax this week but don't tell anybody)
Davidcampbell, if you can tell me what the 14 digits are, then you are right, it is yours ! there were 3 alpha followed bt 11 numeric.
As I constantly have to keep reminding my employer, I don't do favours, I'm covered by a contract of employment. Anyway, I don't suppose Martin has got a property which has been featured in A life of grime and requires cleaning (my current occupation)
It wasn't a case of my bank refusing to tell me who the payer was, they said that they only had the same info as I did, i.e. 14 digits. I thought that they might have known which bank the payment had originated from at least.
To be on the safe side, I dont think I'll put it in a notice account but I'll keep it in easy access.0 -
Can you put the digits on here for us to look at?
with 14 digits first 6 could be sorting code followed by 8 figure account number.
Just a thought.

they will but not instantly available - would need to check with their payments dept so the branch would either call them or ask you to call thro the callcentre to check it.Davidcampbell, if you can tell me what the 14 digits are, then you are right, it is yours ! there were 3 alpha followed bt 11 numeric

good idea eric but looks like its 11 numbers so sounds like its just some sort of reference from the company.
eddie, i see a lot of different payment referecens daily, if you can tell us the letters (dont think the numbers will help any) it might ring some bells with me ....

No payment is ever sent without a trace of where it comes from, your bank are just being lazy. If they phone their clearing centre they will be able to get the number and sort code of the account the money came from.0

It's pretty peculiar. Why don't you try and google the numbers etc.? A lot of companies supply their details in small script somewhere on the web, so it's worth a try (I do that when I have unexplained withdrawals from my account. Never had unexplained payments though!)Three years, six months, three weeks, 13 hours, 48 minutes and 30 seconds. 26011 cigarettes not smoked, saving $11,704.80. Life saved: 12 weeks, 6 days, 7 hours, 35 minutes.0

I went to my account holding branch dinner time after I had spent the morning cleaning out a particularly nasty dwelling that had more wildlife in it than an episode of I'm a celebrity get me out of here. It was quite humid and the odours of my mornings efforts were begining to mature.
I posed my query to the teller who turned out to be the assistant manager who was covering over the dinner break. After checking my I.D. and were the smell was coming from, he said that come Tuesday, he will have "hard copy" of this transaction and he promised that he will phone me with all the details. He said that there was absolutely no need for me to come into the branch. I reckon that I could have got an interest free loan or a gold card off him if I'd have pushed it and promised to leave his branch p.d.q.
Could this be a new money saving technique that I have accidentally discovered ?0
