Unfair defaults on my report - thoughts and advice?

Options
Hi,

So I have just checked my credit report and it came up as 7 recent defaults. Which was a massive shock as never missed a payment. On further investigation, the defaults relate to a bank account that was closed roughly 15 months ago. (Switched current accounts).

Of course phoned said bank straight away, he said from what he can tell was when they did the switch they transferred the money over and did not realise there was a ‘pending transaction’ totalling £371 (what this transaction is for is anyone’s guess). And that they wrote to me once in May last year - not that I can recall ever receiving such a letter - saying that this amount was owed as nationwide (new bank) refused to credit them the money?

He gave me the opportunity to settle it with them by paying the balance I refused unless they could provide proof of said transaction and if they would remove the defaults. He said I was best going into branch to discuss this.

What are your thoughts? Do I have a case here to get the defaults removed? I am mortified and angry! I’m so conscious of making payments on time to not negatively impact my score and then get hit with this!

Would really appreciate any help and thank you for taking time out of your day to read and hopefully reply!

Well you either made the transaction or didn't....which is it. It's not exactly a small sum.
  • I would go into the branch and discuss it.
    As suggested to you already

So it's one default, not 7.
If there was a pending transaction (I assume a debit card transaction) it would have come to light pretty quickly.
Did you not receive a final statement?
Did the bank not send you any further statements?
How could you have not known about this pending transaction?
Finally, for get about your 'score' but worry about this default which, unlike the imaginary score, is real.

Did you use a switching service (as in, they transferred all the DD/SO for you)?

  • It was one of them switching deals, there was money in the account which was transferred over. Surely they are the ones that should have been aware there was a pending transaction? The guy on the phone was insisting it was an error on nationwides part for not letting them take the money out of my new account. I was never informed by either bank of such a transaction/issue.

Large transactions like that were not unusual for me at the time and there was considerably more money originally in the bank that would have more than covered the pending transaction. I really don’t mind paying the money it’s just the defaults I want to be rid of obviously

It’s coming up as a default for every month for the last 7 months
  • It’s still just the one default despite repeating every month.

Go into the branch as advised to sort it
