Tax code

I changed jobs last October and was given a new tax code which is 1256L.
I googled this tax code and couldn't see it apart from the tax code 1250L.
I asked my employer if this was the right code, which they said it is, but couldn't explain the difference between the codes.
Does anyone know what my tax code means?

Do you have a uniform which you are responsible for washing?

As HMRC don't tell them how the 1256L was arrived at your employer couldn't possibly know if it was correct or not.0 -
As far as the employer is concerned the tax code is correct, because they have checked and they can confirm it is the one notified to them by HMRC.
That is their perspective of "correct".
(It may not be the OP's perspective of "correct") !!

These allowances usually do get carried over from year to year. The best idea is to log in to your personal tax account (at gov.uk) and you can check the details of how your tax code is calculated. And there is a button to send HMRC a note of any changes. You can see it for the current year as well as previous years; and from March or thereabouts you get a preview of the following year as well.0

Hopefully that tax code is now 1263L0

If you dig deeper it will show how your code is made up and you should be able to remove elements if they no longer apply.sevenhills said:
