Switching energy supplier and changing name

Is it possible to do a gas and electric supplier switch, and change the name of the account holder at the same time? In other words, if the bill is currently in the name of person A, and I initiate a switch and put the name of person B on the switching form, will this work? Or will it cause problems?

Only one way to find out.
Personally I would wait until switch completed, DDs etc set up & working before attempting name change, bearing in mind that a real human may not be involved at some stages of the switch and "Computer Says No" may become a reality

  • They don't check names, you can put whatever you like for the new switch.

I'm sure someone will pop up mentioning credit checks but I've never seen a case of a supplier actually doing one on sign up

Ovo did a search on my credit record when I moved to a rented property where they were the incumbent supplier.

Do let us know how you get on.

If it works, perhaps we can all switch supplier and put our bills in the name of Theresa May c/o 10 Downing Street?

I assume, in this scenario, you're person B (i.e. not just trying to put your bill into someone else's name without their consent)!

Certainly worked for me doing the same thing but with phone and broadband without any issue.

Company’s will take any information on face value and process it, only if there is a question mark over the address such as lots of names or contracts over a small space of time would they question it as the fraud issue can be raised.
  • Interesting and super random, what would they have done if you failed?

Not like they can stop you moving in.
  • Sorry to crash in on a zombie thread, but OP, did this work for you? In the same position now and interested to know the outcome. TY.

My situation was a little bit different maybe to the op so not sure if my response will be helpful to you. Essentially what needed to happen was the gas and electric bill were in the name of one spouse and that spouse no longer lived there. The gas and electric company allowed the account to go into joint names, because it was always joint, just not on paper, so no real drama there. Then when the switch happened it became just in the remaining spouse living there’s name. Most companies have things in place tbh depending on your circumstances.
