I am reviewing my nephews utility costs (he has special needs), but before looking at energy companies I wanted to get an idea of typical usage for 1person in 1 bed flat.

I have seen averages on some sites but would like a real world idea of typical kWh used per annum for Gas and Electricity.

They have Gas central heating, gas cooker, no electric heating, just usual fridge, TV, computer and gadgets.

There really isn't a "typical" use. Having the heating on all day and all night will obviously use a lot more than someone who goes out to work all day and only heats for a couple of hours a day. The amount of energy required will also depend on how well insulated the place is, has it got double glazing, how many outside walls, ist it a ground floor flat or has it got a flat roof above it etc.

Likewise, a twenty minute shower twice a day will obviously cost a lot more than a 5 minute one once a day or even once a week. same with TV, computers, play stations, washing machines & cooking etc.

The only way to get control of energy costs is to monitor them yourself - taking meter readings at least once a month, sending the readings into the supplier and checking the on-line account to ensure that the bills and statements are accurate.

You can make some assumptions but in the end they are only guesses and you need to monitor it to see if your guess (or the energy company's estimate was anywhere close)
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

I totally agree with this. One person's typical usage isn't another's. I'm with Bulb and my bills are predicting to come out at about £350 a year for dual fuel. I don't have a full year kwh usage yet unfortunatley.

But I am quite stingey with all my usage because I have to keep the bills down. I would imagine someone else with different needs and a different budget could use twice mine and a lot of it depends on your provider.

    Ask the current occupier(s)
    Consult the EPC
Consult a comparison site, saying you don't know your consumption

... and if the answer to all 3 is 42, you know it's gotta be right!
