If I pay off my student loans with Erudio...

I have never earned enough to be able to pay back my student loans from the nineties.
Unfortunately, through moving and SLC not updating their records, my loans weren't always deferred so they got passed to Erudio.
They threaten me with giving my loans over to people like Capquest if I don't make payments. So now, even when I reach 50, my loans won't be written off.
I have heard about it not being a good idea to pay them off partially from a credit point of view from Money Saving Expert.
If I managed to pay it all off (about £5000), does anyone know if that would clear my account so that I would be able to apply for a postgraduate loan? At the moment my student loan account says I am not able to because I owe arrears (which is about £5000 in total).
I just don't want to go and pay it all off and discover I still wouldn't be able to apply for a postgraduate loan.
Thank you for your help.
