Storing motorcycle in locked storage facility

Hi
Given the high level of motorcycle / scooter / moped thefts nationwide, I'm considering renting a storage container - essentially a shipping container with a secure protected padlock - for keeping my scooter in when not in use instead of keeping it at my home address. The facility has about 40 plus storage containers with only a single gated access which are controlled electronically.
The storage facility is only accessible using pre-registered users using their own specific mobile number to remotely access the site's electronic gates. The site is also covered by CCTV 24 hrs 7 days a week. Each container is locked by individual security padlocks which are enclosed by a metal security cover / shroud to stop a lock being bolt-cropped in the unlikely event of an intruder gaining access to the site.
Bikers / scooter riders are increasingly using such facilities to prevent their bike / scooter being stolen.Has anyone else used such a facility and how do insurance companies view the use of such facilities i.e. does it have a positive or negative effect upon an insurance premium?
Thank you all in advance. Ride Safe.

Don't know re: insurance premiums. One thing that has been specified on some policies is a Thatcham-approved chain or armoured cable, might be worth checking if one wll help your premiums.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Sounds like an absolute ball ache when you want to nip out for a quick ride.
Not a chance I'd be doing it.0 -
Read the Ts & Cs of the storage site - it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they didn't allow motor vehicles to be stored, because of the fire risk.
I can't see it being any more ballache than any other remote storage, such as a lock-up garage. It'd certainly be a more secure alternative to a lock-up, although I'd imagine it'll be a LOT more expensive.0 -
I doubt it'd be allowed as there's petrol in it. There'll most likely be small print about not storing a whole bunch of stuff.... and petrol/tank, acid/battery might fall foul of those.0

A lot of insurance policies will attract a higher premium if the bike is not stored at your usual address. It also seems somewhat of a faff having to go and deposit / collect your bike each time you want to use it. And how long before the storage charges exceed the value of the bike?
Keep it at home. If you can, keep it off road and out of sight. Use a decent lock & chain and cover. In practical terms that is about as much as you can do if you do not have a garage.0 -
£30 - £40 a week for a container?
Beware 24/7 access, had to access a place like that in the past and you had to use the gate phone and give a password and they didnt like out f hours calls, especially if you had to going and out a few times.
You needed to call them to get in and get out.
The massive shroud that protects the locks has a small weakness with a certain easily obtained tool.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I saw a shed for a bike made from a normal shed with a reinforcing mesh cage welded up and bolted to the ground before the shed was built round it. Suitable door / locks etc on the cage. Bike also attached to ring bolt IIRC.
Seems cheaper and handier to me.
Anyone looking to nick a bike is going to look elsewhere. . .0
