Barley straw for pond?

I've got a small garden fish pond - about 1m*2m, with 5 goldfish. It has got a bit murky in the hot weather, with a fair bit of slimy weed growing and a little white foam. I've pulled out a load of weed, and I've heard barley straw suggested as an old style remedy for excess weed/slime. Would I just float one of these in the pond? https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F264020391660

Yes we purchased a pack of three of these and the first one is in there, the second will go in this year. It worked a treat.0
