    How can the OP possibly tell what the condition of the house might be after not seeing it for 8 years?!
    When did the tenancy end and who is named on it? OP, just apply for return of the deposit in the prescribed manner: the LL has no right to demand contact details.
    OP and his ex, if named on the tenancy agreement, are jointly and severally liable for any damages other than reasonable wear and tear, or any rent arrears.
    I too find it hard to believe that you would let a tenancy run for 8 years after moving out!
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    I gave the LL my email address and in his mail he said he’ll waive what we “owe”. His itemised list is typically ridiculous e.g. £225 to remove the swing(!)

    I’d challenge it but I’ve got much bigger issues at the moment.
