venturer 40gb h/d

hey folks, i was one of those who bought the mp3 player above for £50 from argos last year.
the h/d on it has now gone, it just whirs and nothing happens.
i've had a look inside and it's a seagate momentus 4200.2 st9402113a.
i can't seem to find a replacement anywhere.
has anyone had this problem and managed to replace the h/d? must it be the exact same h/d? would it even work? i can find similar but it's st9402112a. i don't even know the difference just that it's different.
if anyone could shed some light on this that'd be great.
guess i can't grumble for £50. those moving parts aren't designed to be bounced about in yer pocket.

think you had best email seagate since no one is replying firstly to find out warranty or to get a reseller.

Not sure if purchasing a new dive will be cost efficient though?

The big question (providing money is no object) that you have not asked, does the operating system resides on the chip, or the disk. If it resides on the disk, then you will have to get the OS from somewhere. How is the disk formatted?

    Not under warranty is it?
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)

ye that was a couple of my worries, if all the info needed is on the h/d. i'll maybe try seagate and also keep an eye out for some new cheap mp3.
it was about 2/3 months out of warranty.just my luck.
  • You don't need to get exactly the same hard drive - any laptop 2.5" IDE drive will work (most new laptop drives seem to be SATA nowadays so beware when ordering). Best not to go bigger than 60GB though as there seems to br a limit to the number of files you can put on it (10,000).

I just bought a 60GB one off eBay for £25 and it works fine - I'm actually filling it with songs as I write this.

Remove the ribbon cable from the old drive (carefully) then connect it to the new one. Put the case back together then plug the unit into the computer via USB. Format the new drive to FAT32, then download the latest firmware here http://www.arwservices.co.uk/ (either 3.0.2 or 3.0.3 - depending on whether you want a beep when you press a key or not). Create a new folder called 'System' on the newly formatted drive and extract the 4 files contained in the firmware directly to that folder (making sure that no additional folders are created in the process). Then unplug the unit from the USB and it should update itself to the new firmware - after which it will turn itself off and be ready for use.
