Painting a painted shed

We’ve got a shed that’s previously been painted dark brown, not sure if it’s a wood stain or a normal paint, it’s fading and we want to paint it a similar green to the heading bars on this forum.

Do we need to sand it down a bit to get a key on the paint? Or can we paint straight over it?

And what paint would you suggest please? We’re both new to external wood painting ☺️

You can usually guess from the colour

shed/fence paint they are the cheaper options last from 1-5 years depending on weather and exposure

Might be a more expensive like Cuprinol garden shades or equivalent
    more pastels and brighter options.

Could be even more expensive exterior paints.

have a look at the various suppliers to if you can find a match

    eg. https://www.cuprinol.co.uk/sheds/index.jsp

I like ducksback as a compromise between price/performance.

I found some cheap garden shades and the WIlko equivilent so an working through those.

if rough wood no need to sand just give a good wash and brush off any loose stuff.

green over brown probably 2 coats first time.

(not there are multiple versions of the forum with different colours)

best time to stock up on exterior products is end of season usually 75%+ off regular prices.
Other time you will find offers but often 50% is typical.

Your next question may be about spray options----it gets everywhere if not very carefull

As above, I like to use Cuprinol ducksback, Forest Green is the colour you probably want. No need to rub down the shed just paint over but you may need a couple or three coats.

Thanks guys, because of the dark colour of the shed, would it be worth applying a coat of white undercoat first to 'lighten' the wood before applying the green exterior paint? The shed is in full view of the house so wanted to get it spot on
