I think a lot depends on your budget.

and whether he can already play some guitar and you know he will play more or will give up in the New Year!

If you are near a Home Bargains store they have 2 sizes of acoustic guitar and even a pink one for girls or for those who like pink! Didn't notice the prices but HB aren't known for being very expensive.

You could consider an old favourite of these forums - the guitar starter kit from ebuyer. I've had one (with black guitar) for just over a year and its an excellent beginner set. Search the forums for 'ebuyer guitar' to read previous threads...
  • Aldi had some on their Christmas list for approx £40.
We got one last year for our kids to share. My husband plays a bit and knew what to look out for,he said it was a good basic instrument, suitable for a beginner.Assuming they are the same type it's a good buy.
  • Have a chat with your local music shop, as some have agreements with schools so that you can buy via the school and they can knock the VAT off.

That's how I bought mine and my daughters acoustics, she got a 3/4 Lauren and I bought a Fender acoustic.

All I need now is enough talent to play it :D teaching yourself is hard work!

I have a £250 left handed fender squier sat here unloved because pet teenager has decided he can play better right handed (played it 3 times). Ive been trying to get £80 for it for an age but it seems there are no leftie guitarists left!!
