I'm lookin to buy my brother a guitar for xmas. He has no idea how to play, i dont think he's ever held one before. I dont wanna spend too much incase he loses interest. I have no idea what i'm lookin for as prices vary for £50 to £500?!
Any help would be appreciated!

what age is he?
both my lads started on 3/4 size acoustic, a cheapy indeed! £19.99 from Argos if I remember correctly.
They have since progressed to larger and costlier ones but it was money well spent while they got interested and whether they wanted to persue.Panda xx

well I looked on Argos website and there is a full size 1 for around £50.
Take him to a guitar/music shop and try out a 3/4 size. My eldest (small frame 17 yr old) still plays his 3/4, now he calls it his busking guitar tho!Panda xx

Some cheap Guitars are pretty nasty and may well switch your brother off before he learns much. It would probably be better to start off with an acoustic model to start with, electrics are cool but you're going to need an amp and leads etc as well. You can get some pretty good savings from online retailers like gear4music.com, soundsmusical.com and imuso.co.uk amongst others. I think you won't go far wrong with a "folk" Yamaha to start as they take some beating for low end value for money, something like this: www.imuso.co.uk/ProductDetail.asp?StockCode=AG00060
A starter electric will set you back a bit more for something half decent.0 -

fairly sure I saw one in Asda for £50. Didn't look at it but I'm no expert anyway.

You could consider an old favourite of these forums - the guitar starter kit from ebuyer. I've had one (with black guitar) for just over a year and its an excellent beginner set. Search the forums for 'ebuyer guitar' to read previous threads...
Have to agree, I bought one of those guitars a few months ago, and they are excellent value for the money - it's better quality than one of my other guitars which cost me over £250.
Plus, any kid would find it MUCH cooler to have an electric guitar than an acoustic. Might make him stick at it for longer! And as someone else mentioned, electric guitars are easier to learn on because the guitar neck is not so wide, and the strings are much easier to move.
EDIT: just realised he's not a kid, he's 22... but then again, all us blokes are kids at heart, so the advice still applies!0 -
yup gotta agree, electrics are easier to play, much less painful on the fingertips, and tbh he's probably more likely to stick with it if he can work to reproduce his fav songs.
my boyfriend plays guitar in a band and he still finds the acoustic hard work0 -
